Chapter 12: Scry Me A River

Time was running out. I needed to figure out the passcode to Onyx’s computer. I had looked throughout her room for clues, but came up empty. There was one option I hadn’t tried. Magic.

I hurried into the kitchen. The second I turned on the light the lapis painted room lit up. I opened the white cupboard next to the sink. Inside were plates and bowls. I retrieved a glass bowl. It would for what I had planned.

I filled the bowl with cool water. I cranked the top of a wooden salt grinder and grounded pink Himalayan salt into the water. I got out a spoon from the dishwasher and stirred the liquid. Vwahla! Instant salt water for scrying.

Carefully, I carried the bowl into the dining room. After setting it on the table I grabbed matches from an altar drawer. I lit the candle in the center of the dining room table, sat down facing east, and peered into the water. “Forces of earth, air, fire and water. Reveal to me the secrets I need to see.” I blew out my breath across the water’s surface and waited.

After several minutes the white candle wax had begun to melt. I was getting nowhere fast. Wax dripped upon the table.

A shiver ran down my spine. I accidentally bumped the table. More wax fell, but this time it dribbled into the salt water. Shit. The spell was ruined. Or so I thought.

The wax spread out into the water and created the number one. Then again, it could have just been a line, but I was betting on the number. I had no other choice.

I cautiously picked up the candle and dropped more wax into the water. It formed a figure eight. That was eighteen. Were the rest of the password digits, too.

More wax. I needed more wax. I shifted the candle around which caused the flame to liquify more of it.

Three more drops created a circle. Was that a zero or the letter O? My bet was zero. Just a few more drops would give the last number of the passcode.

I full on tilted the candle to melt as much of the wax as possible. I was anxious for that last figure. I watched the wax drop, drop, drop. I took in a heavy breath. There before my eyes I watched the pools of wax spin in the water. They coalesced into the answer. The number six emerged from the water.

“Thank you spirits. Blessed be.” I blew out the candle.

I jumped up and dropped the candle on the table simultaneously. Then I booked it upstairs to Onyx’s old bedroom.

“Where are you going in such a hurry?” Mama asked as I whizzed by her on the second floor.

“Can’t talk. Gotta work.” There was no stopping me.

I heard her thumping up the stairs behind me. She could wait. The numbers buzzing in my head could not.

I busted open the bedroom door and dashed over to the computer desk. I sat down, heaved a heavy breath, and wiggled the mouse.
